Tips on Scanning and Uploading Images
We are interested in images and photographs relating to dance and music that have been saved by those who experienced the jazz era first-hand. We also appreciate photos and images that help to give context to oral history interviews uploaded to the site: for instance pictures of people or places discussed in an interview.
- If you do not have a document scanner at home, many public libraries have computers with scanning stations for public use and friendly staff to help you.
- Be sure when you scan that you are using one of the image file formats we accept. These are PNG’s, JPEG’s, and GIF’s. We prefer PNG or JPEG.
- Scan in color even if you are scanning a black and white image.
- Scan at high resolution, such that the image could be displayed at its original size without deterioration or pixilation.
- We appreciate if you crop images to their appropriate borders and rotate them so that they sit in the appropriate direction for viewing.
- When you upload images you will be asked to caption and describe each photograph with tags relating to places, people, dates, musicians/performers, and types of dance. Make sure you know all there is to know about these things before you upload.
